Description
A
system for prevention and protection
against hydrocarbon spills and toxic leakages, during the
activity of oil rigs on land, has been defined, in
accordance with the environmental quality systems ISO 14000
and EMAS.
A
risk analysis , carried out through comparison of territorial
and operating surveys, with special consideration to the
activity inside the oil rig
location in relation to the
superficial water drainage pattern, allows to locate
in advance the places where most probably such accidents could
take place , as well as to estimate their pollution
potential.
Adequate
containment and emergency protections, to be put in action in a few
minutes, are consequently prearranged in these places.
The
pollution element, spreading, on superficial waters and on the
land is immediately stopped at its source, so keeping the possible environmental damage and
its relative remediation costs at a very low levels.

Benefits
to Environment,
Health and Safety
Prevention
and protection plans against oil spills or toxic liquids leakages,
constitute an effective environmental safeguard tool for all industrial
sites.
However,
in case of land oil rigs, due to their peculiarity in relation
to the environment where they are placed, either natural or anthropic, prevention and protection plans are of the greatest
importance.
Set
up of fixed sites for monitoring and for spill containment chosen on the
basis of a detailed study, training and information to the oil rig staff,
as well as immediate availability of oil-sorbent/ water repellent
products,
constitute an effective protection against environmental damages, due to
possible accidents that can happen during the activity of a land drilling
rig.

Economical
Benefits
The
cost of environmental damages caused by an hydrocarbon spill,
which is not immediately contained and comes in contact with the
shallow drainage pattern, can rise up to a very large amount of money,
depending on the environment and on the conditions of the place where the
accident occurs. The
implementation
of a prevention and protection system allows an economical
benefit which varies according to the dimensions of the accident and of the
avoided damage. |
